Every now and then, I get to attend an event and then write it up, and I really believe in it. I am passionate about fashion (obvi, I know) and if there is one aspect of this industry that really gets me going, it is the fact that there are so many talented people who do not have the support needed to truly take their place on the fashion stage (or runway, if you will).
Well, an answer to this obvious need for support is the amazing Mercedes Benz Start Up competition that held it’s semi-finals, in Montreal last week. This competition is designed to support and promote up-and-coming Canadian designers, and to help these designers launch successful careers beyond the first step of creating a collection.
I was delighted to see some of my faves (and major players) from the industry in attendance and judging the competition.
I got a chance to head backstage and see the racks of clothing prepared for the show:
The always fabulous Shawn Hewson was also there…not to mention his slick disco-ball inspired shoes that I loved.
The competition was between five up-and-coming designers, who have been in the business for less than five years and are all vying for a chance to have their creations shown at LG Fashion Week, Beauty by L’Oreal Paris.
The media and industry insiders eagerly awaited the parade of fabulous fashions.
First up was Martin Lim, well-structured basics mixed with elegant movement.
Next (and a personal favorite) was Faren, with inspiration that had a hint of the macabre (think Tim Burton meets Japanese Vogue).
Travis Taddeo captured my heart with interesting silhouettes and a fringe vest to die for.
Anastasia Lomonova‘s mummified models looked totally chic. I might actually dig wearing one of those bodysuits (provided I could see!).
Finally, UNTTLD made up in fashion what its name lacks in vowels: completely wearable and edgy separates that would be easily integrated in any store or personal closet.
Fashion wasn’t only on the runway. I spotted lots of fun style in the audience: An awesome pair of Aldo shoes, a hot pink look that rocked, and an elegant white dress with beautiful sleeve and collar detailing.
And, as this all-important contest (that promises to get exponentially bigger in the years to come) got one step closer to the finish line, the industry insiders came out to witness this fashion revolution, and stayed out to celebrate it.
